Lesson Four

Navigating Google Earth

Lesson four introduces us to Google Earth.  In this lesson, give your students adequate time to explore using Google Earth before instructing.  Discuss with students what is meant by “bird’s eye view”.  Discuss how you would go about finding your home in Google Earth.  Mention such things as natural features you could look for, prominent structures in your community that might help you locate your house/school.

Next, watch the Google Earth Animated Tutorial: Navigation and Search

Now we are ready to try a Google Earth Scavenger Hunt which can be found in the PlaceNames Journal.  This is a great activity to do to familiarize ourselves with the features of Google Earth.  Please use the provided copies of the PlaceNames Journal to do this exercise.  Keep the original copies in your curriculum binder for your masters to reproduce as needed.
